Much Ado About an Article

You know whats worse than someone trying to get your attention?
Giving it to them.

Which is what ive seen a lot of my dear friends and acquaintances do lately.

So someone wrote an article lambasting Nigerian entertainment.
Err..

Hasn’t that been done before? And sometimes, even by the same writer? So why is this one any different? Have DBanj, PSquare, 9ice, Banky W, Terry G, and so on and so for th, not been lambasted before? So why is this one different?
Because he mentioned a lot of names? Or just because? I don’t get!
Do I buy into the article?
No.
I think the fact that Lord Lugards MISTRESS named Nigeria, gives me EVERY right to change its name!
I think that stage names are important to distinguish from the artiste and the individual and I believe there are also examples of older artistes with stage names
I see my dad, who is well over 60, listening to music by artistes like Kel, like Lord of Ajasa, like PSquare, like J Martins and co, and loving it. Hey! He sometimes gives me the news before I hear it!
I know what Rooftop MC’s mean when they say, ‘Ori mi wu, e lagi mo’, and I see no difference between what Loose Kaynon says when he says SWAGGER MI TI POJU, and what Pa Fatai Rolling Dollar says when sings, WON KERE SI NUMBER WA
I see Nigerian artistes who basically have to fend for themselves because structures that should have been put in place where eroded a long time ago!
And I applaud the artistes who find this article annoying.
Me I just don’t get why they are paying it this much attention.

Do they pay us attention when as their fans, we complain that everyone is using the same beat?
Has anyone of them listened to us when we say we are tired of ‘Moet’ ‘Bentley’, ‘Maga’ and other words in their lyrics?
When last did they show they care that inspite of the fact that we cringe when we listen to some of the music they churn out, we still support them wholeheartedly?
Did anyone of them hold a press conference when we joked that we’d rather they didn’t say ‘DJ TRACK 1’ any longer?
When last did they stand up for alternative artistes, for clean music, for live music?

So why are they huffing and puffing now?
What happened to freedom of speech?
Isnt it the same freedom they exercise when they go into the studio and say what they want, how they want it, and then perform it?
Come on!
This article is news. But you know what they say about todays news being non existent yesterday and bin liner tomorrow?
But it would seem a Mission Impossible has now become Mission Accomplished because we continue to twit, facebook and email it!
Let us (for the article was directed at ALL OF US) internalise that anger so we can turn criticism into gold.
On this note I rest my case.
Oun to ba wun anybody lo le fenu e so!

Monday morning.... Wednesday Evening

The week is a lot longer than Monday to Wednesday, but this week, for me, three interesting things will happen!
Kels album goes on sale nationwide this week, and having listened to some of the singles, and seen the video for the most recent single - TOO FINE, im determined to ask every vendor for a copy!

Im even going to be catching a movie Monday evening with my Naija Twitville peeps! I cant believe it, but we managed to get on Twitter and form a damn village!

And on WEDNESDAY, well, Nigerians will stand up at SWE BAR, and celebrate one of their own who is doing us proud every day of the week, and twice on Sunday!
I have great respect for Tolu Ogunlesi, and congratulate him!

Thank you Ryan!

This post is about a movie which did at a seating, what others have failed to do for me in long while- made me feel good and what to imagine!

First there was MARLEY AND ME which didn't hit the mark for me!
Then there was HE IS JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU, which really tried, and which TB loved, and which was getting there but still wasn't!
And there was THE PROPOSAL

THere are different kinds of movies and we see them for varied reasons and while in different moods!
Sometimes, you want to see an intellectual movie; its all about the twists and turns and plots!
Other times, you just want your regular run of the mill action- it doesnt have to make sense, there just have to be enough car chases!
Then there are those moments when you want to laugh. Not the giggles of a first date, but the kind of laugh that comes with tears attached.
And once in a while, you want to sit with popcorn, with a bunch of friends from university, and watch a feel-good rom-com that just makes you want to grab someone and plant a kiss on them while laughing happily!

And that is what THE PROPOSAL is- a feel good movie in every sense of it.

Devilishly cute actor with great comedic timing? CHECK
Girl Next Door actress with an uncanny knack for comedy? CHECK
Some cute animal, preferably a dog? CHECK
Fantastic co-actors who are as funny as they are zany? CHECK
A believable but still fairytalistic plot? CHECK
Lovely pictures, Appropriate music, Nice balance of wit, sarcasm and irony? CHECK

IN SHORT! CHECK CHECK CHECK!

Whats the movie about?
Sandra Bullock is Ryan Reynolds boss and she bullies him into agreeing to marry her so she can get a visa and not be departed from America. If it feels like you have heard that story before, it is because you have seen different aspects of that plot from previous movies, but who cares?!

You will like this movie. You will find it funny, and relate with it and root for someone in the movie! And even when you do see the alleged twists coming a mile off, you will still feel warm and gooey and possibly clap at intervals. And when you get up from your seat in that cinema hall, you will want to hug someone, kiss someone, and go to be that night, dreaming dreams, about love and ever afters.

I do have one complaint though- there was only one proper kiss in that movie. And i demand more!

For Mama, Mama, She and Captain

I dont do death well

I don't mean my dying
I mean reacting to death.

I remember my grandmother died at the age of 90something
I loved that woman and had hung out with her everyday till she died. She told me stories, and showed me love. But she died and i didn't cry. I just folded clothes and cleaned my room.
Then one day, when noone else was home, i cried.

I went to Kogi this January to see Mama Ekundayo. She felt superhuman, like she should be packaged to keep encouraging others. I hugged her frail form and felt safe and ready to take on the world.
Then i heard she died. And i folded clothes and cleaned my room.
Then one random afternoon while watching t.v at home, i saw her picture and the tears came.

I lost someone dear to me. I can't tell you too much about her.
I smoked and drank, but even if you had asked, i could not have told you why.
Then one day i was driving and a song came on the radio, and i cried so hard that i had to park.

Now i don't know when Cousin Wole's tears will come. I loved him so much, and my dad loved him like a brother.
I cry more for my dad than for me.
Im blogging and eating, and texting and laughing.
But one day, the tears will come.
Forgive me if they come when you are there....

For MAMA, MAMA EKUNDAYO, SHE, and CAPTAIN WOLE BUCKNOR
R.I.P
Thank you for being there
Thank GOD for HE knows best
